Dr. Mohammad Forouzesh, better known as Dr. Mo by students and faculty at California State University of Long Beach, loves what he does, and does what he loves. Dr. Mo is the current Director of the Graduate Program in Public Health at California State University of Long Beach.
He is a family man who loves to spend time with his wife, Jennifer, and two daughters. His 24-year old daughter, Monica, currently resides in Los Angeles as an aspiring actress, and her younger sister, Kimmia, who prefers to be called Mia, is presently studying communications at the Dominican University in San Francisco. Dr. Mo’s wife of 29 years, is the Assistant Director of Nursing at Saddleback Community College in Mission Viejo and a practicing Nurse.
Dr. Mo, who made his parents proud by earning a PhD in Public Health, comes from a family with several generations of doctors including his father. He is close with and frequently visits his 85-year old mother who lives nearby in Southern California. Dr. Mo has a sister, who lives in Washington, D.C., and an older brother, who lives in Tehran, Iran.
Prior to earning his PhD at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Mo earned a Masters in Public Health also at the University of Tennessee. He completed his undergraduate work, (BS Degree in Health Sciences), at the University of Oregon. He has been teaching in the field of Public Health for 32 years. His resume includes: past chair of the Healthy Orange County; working with the nutrition network; Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Program (ATOD); school districts and gang and violence issues.
Dr. Mo is the current Director of the Graduate Program in Public Health at California State University of Long Beach. He has a profound effect on his students, colleagues, the department, and the campus environment. Dr. Mo not only manages many evaluation projects, but he also works as a health educator with the law enforcement community, the judicial groups, the Department of Education, the county public health departments, and many other minority-based and non-governmental organizations.
In his spare time, Dr. Mo enjoys spending time with friends and family, tending to his vegetable garden, taking daily five-mile walks with his wife, reading poetry to others, and playing poker with his old friends every Saturday. He and his wife hike every Sunday in local national forests for spiritual reasons.
Dr. Mo, who immediately admits that he is not a micro-manager, inspires everyone around him to perform to the best of their ability. This quality makes him an exceptional Director of the graduate students. He can be reached day or night and makes strangers feel as though they have known him for years. Students, colleagues, community members, who are lucky enough to know Dr. Mo, believe they are fortunate because so much can be learned from him. Despite his extremely busy schedule, he will always make time to assist anyone in need. He adheres to his “20% theory,” which he describes as a way to work only 20% of the time and be more productive, work to grow, connect to discover, and have fun! This theory allows Dr. Mo to manage many different projects, positions, and titles while still leaving time for friends, family, and hobbies.
